It’s a boy!

IT’S A BOY!

Well, I know this blog is dedicated to chronicling the cost of raising a child – ie. following the flow of money – but I couldn’t help but blog today.  Even though it didn’t cost us anything – here in Canada, healthcare isn’t pay-to-play – today was one of the most important steps towards parenthood.  Today we found out that our baby is going to be a boy!

While that’s thrilling for us, in terms of the “costs of raising a child”, I suppose if the kid is anything like me, we’ll be looking at higher costs to replace destroyed household items, maybe some higher food bills and if he’s unlike his father, maybe we’ll even have to pay for hockey equipment (yuck).

Anyway, the foundation is now set.  We know when we’re having a baby and we know that it’ll be a boy. So, the only remaining question is:

What IS the cost of raising a child (this child) going to be?  Stay tuned.

True Cost of Children

Welcome to “The Cost of Raising a Child” (dot com).

I was motivated to create this site first-and-foremost because my wife is pregnant!  It’s been a whirlwind year for us:

  • We were married in September; after 7 years together
  • We then spent a month in Europe for our honeymoon
  • We returned home, …and were pregnant 10 days later
  • We purchased our first home

Since we’ve thus far managed to fund all of these activities ourselves — or at least, with the bank’s help – I thought the only responsible thing left for me to do was to find out the true cost of raising a child.

I’m very conservative with my finances, and I want to make sure that I can support my family and continue the lifestyle we’re accustomed to, so it’s time to put numbers to the upcoming events so that I can be prepared.

Throughout the next several months, you can expect TheCostOfRaisingAChild (Pronounced with the appropriate spaces: The Cost of Raising a Child) to look at exactly what you’d expect.  Basically, I need and want to know – just how much is this going to cost me.

So, please feel free to join me and my family on this journey.  Whatever I learn, I promise to share it with you.  And to my child – tomorrow we find out if you are a boy or a girl.  Whichever you are, I’m sure you’re going to cost a lot!  So, when you get older, please read this and learn exactly what it cost to give you all those things you’ve taken for granted all these years!  (kidding, of course).

Cheers. and please, if you know how much is costs to raise a child, leave me some comments and advice!
